Inlays are designed to fit inside the tooth on the grooved area between the cusps or points. Full-coverage crowns fit over the entire tooth. Natural structure must be removed to make room for the crown that fits over the tooth like a cap fits over your head.

This is when either inlays or their fuller coverage counterpart, onlays, may be recommended. Similar to the inlay, the onlay fits inside the grooves of the tooth.
