Biological/Mercury Free Dentistry

There is more to caring for the smile than repairing damage. At Nashua Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry, P.L.L.C., we recognize the correlation between oral health and the body. Numerous studies have identified the mouth as a source of health concerns such as difficulty managing diabetes or an increased risk of respiratory disease. We want to promote health and wellness in our patients. One of the ways we do this is to use only the safest, most durable dental materials when addressing tooth damage.

Mercury Free Dentistry Before and After

What does it mean to be mercury free?

Although it has been a common practice for more than a century, most people have not realized, until recently, that amalgam dental fillings contain mercury. Amalgams have long been referred to as “silver fillings,” giving the impression that silver was the base for restoration. In fact, there are several metals included in amalgam, such as tin and nickel. Binding various metals together is mercury, a substance that has been scrutinized for its efficacy and safety.

Dr. Smith and Dr. Byer are happy to be mercury free dentists in New Hampshire. We believe that there are newer materials that offer significant advantages over amalgams, and commit to their use. When you visit our office for cavity repair, you will benefit from our use of composite resin or porcelain.

Both composite resin and porcelain look very natural. In fact, once restorations are in place, no one but your dentist and you will know you ever had a cavity. In addition to an improved appearance, tooth-colored fillings, inlays, and onlays have shown themselves to be extremely durable. For several reasons, these restorations outperform outdated amalgam fillings.

A primary disadvantage that has been discovered with amalgams is that they expand and contract more than the natural tooth structure. After years of movement within the tooth, an amalgam is likely to cause fractures. When this happens, infection may develop in the center of the tooth. At the very least, further repair will be needed to strengthen the fragile, fractured tooth.

Metal free, mercury free restorations expand and contract so similarly to teeth, that there is virtually no risk that fractures will occur. In fact, teeth treated with custom inlays and onlays actually increase in strength because of this level of care.
