Teeth Whitening Systems

Teeth whitening is currently the most common cosmetic dentistry procedure, and there are a number of options available to patients. Learn about your teeth whitening options to decide which system will best suit your financial, scheduling, and whitening needs.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening is the most expensive yet most effective tooth bleaching option. With in-office whitening, patients relax in a treatment chair while a dentist paints a peroxide gel onto the surface of the teeth while making sure to keep the gums clean. Then, a special light is shone on the treated teeth to activate the bleaching agents in the gel. This may be repeated a number of times in one visit until optimal results are achieved, but in some cases patients need to return for additional treatment. With in-office teeth whitening, patients can quickly enjoy teeth that are up to twelve shades whiter. The national average cost of in-office tooth whitening is $650.

Dentist-Supplied Home Whitening Kits

If in-office teeth whitening isn’t right for you, you may opt for a take-home whitening kit supplied by your cosmetic dentist. These kits are often created with a less concentrated form of the gel dentists use for in-office whitening. Patients are fitted with dental trays to which they apply the gel and can be worn for a few hours or overnight to gradually whiten teeth. Take-home whitening systems typically cost between $100 and $400.

Over-the-Counter Whitening Systems

While over-the-counter whitening system are the most affordable and convenient method of teeth whitening, treatment often takes a longer time and yields slightly less dazzling results than dentist-supplied whitening options. However, these methods are certainly effective, and when used as directed can absolutely brighten the appearance of a patient’s smile. At-home whitening kits cost anywhere from $20 to $100. If you are interested in whitening your teeth at home, ask your dentist which system is best for you.
