Overview of Dental Implants: Frequently Asked Questions

A dental implant can be considered by almost anyone that is missing teeth. A dental implant is a permanent option that is not only functional but creates a nice smile as well. Dental implants do require surgery and as with any surgical procedure the patient should be well-informed prior to undergoing the dental procedure. Here are some frequently asked questions regarding dental implants.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are artificial posts that are made of titanium that are placed in the jaw bone and topped with a prosthetic tooth. Dental implants are a good option for anyone missing one or more teeth.

How are dental implants placed?

Dental implants are normally placed in two steps. The first step is the placing of the titanium posts in the jaw. The patient typically has to wait three to six months depending on placement for the post to bond with the gum. During the waiting period patients have a temporary bridgework or dentures in place. The second step is after the bonding process and that is when the new teeth are anchored to the posts.

Who makes an ideal candidate for dental implants?

As with any surgical procedure an ideal candidate should be in good health. Some conditions that could hinder a person from having a dental implant are diabetes, undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, blood disorders, and certain cancers. Additionally, if you do not have enough bone for the implant you may have to explore other options.

What is the recovery time involved in dental implants?

In most cases people who undergo a dental implant procedure are able to return to normal activities such as work or school the next day. There may be some pain associated with a dental implant procedure. However, that can be controlled with medication. Your cosmetic dentist may also put you on a soft food diet for a period of time after the implant is placed.
